Same AI wave, two outcomes.

TCS grew AI revenue 20% without giving up margin, while Info Edge says AI search cut Shiksha’s billings by 27%. Plus: AI forecasts that called a hurricane early, and India’s new rules for doctors’ AI ads

🌍  Global AI

AI models outpaced physics models on Hurricane Isaias

hurricane weather forecast map

• AI forecasting models correctly predicted Isaias would hit near Destin, Florida; traditional physics models pointed the wrong way toward Alabama. The National Hurricane Center blended both with human judgement, a combination that outperformed any single model.
• AI has now earned trust on storm path prediction through repeated accuracy. It still lags on intensity, and both AI and physics models missed Hurricane Otis's explosive growth in 2023, a data-sparse region off Mexico.
Bottom Line: Hybrid AI-plus-human systems are proving more reliable than either alone in high-stakes forecasting. Builders of decision tools should design explicitly for where their model's confidence is lowest, not just where it's highest.

🇮🇳  India

TCS holds margins as AI revenue grows 20%

TCS logo

• TCS reported an operating margin of 24% in Q2, flat quarter-on-quarter despite rising AI investment. Annualised AI revenue reached $3.1 billion, up 20% from the previous quarter's $2.6 billion.
• The risk: AI is compressing billable hours across India's $315 billion IT sector, pushing prices down. TCS holding margins through that is a signal, though Morningstar flags possible slowdown in consumer-sector client spending.
Bottom Line: India's IT sector is absorbing AI deflation, where fewer billable hours per task compress prices, better than feared, for now. The real stress test comes when legacy contract renewals arrive and clients price in AI productivity gains.

India's medical regulator sets rules for AI ads

India medical regulation

• India's National Medical Commission (NMC, the body that licenses doctors) now bans AI-generated medical ads that mislead on diagnoses, outcomes or patient testimonials. Violations can escalate from warnings to a 1-3 year licence removal.
• The gap: rules cover only doctors and hospitals, not platforms or ad agencies running deepfake-doctor content. No detection or takedown mechanism exists yet, so enforcement depends on complaints reaching State Medical Councils.
Bottom Line: Regulators are moving from broad AI guidelines to licence-linked penalties in specific sectors, raising the stakes for builders of health-marketing tools. If your product generates or places medical content, consent flows and AI labelling are now compliance requirements, not optional.

Google's AI search cuts Shiksha billings by 27%

Shiksha Info Edge logo

• Info Edge's education platform Shiksha saw billings fall 27.2% year-on-year to ₹20.5 crore in Q2. The company attributes the drop to AI-driven search answering education queries directly, sending fewer users to the site.
• Info Edge's other platforms, Naukri, 99acres, Jeevansathi, all grew because they own both sides of a marketplace. Shiksha relied on Google for distribution it didn't control, and that's where AI search hit hardest.
Bottom Line: AI Overviews in Google search are redirecting queries that once drove traffic to content platforms, compressing billings without any product failure on the platform's part. Any Indian startup whose growth depends on Google organic traffic should audit how much of it AI answers directly.

⚡  Mailr Signal

The TCS and Shiksha results together make a sharp point: AI rewards businesses that own the user relationship or both sides of a market, and quietly taxes those that rely on third-party distribution. That split is likely to widen.

Our take, not a news summary.
