The AI Brief for India's Tech Builders

Monday, 24 August 2026

India is getting frontier AI with a crucial new guarantee: the work—and the data—can stay inside the country. AWS has brought GPT-5.6 Terra and Luna to Indian regions, potentially removing a major blocker for banks, hospitals, and government buyers. The bigger question is what happens next.

🌍  Global AI

Slack now has channels where agents write the code

Salesforce launched Slack Code, adding dedicated code channels where AI agents from Anthropic, GitHub, Cognition, ChatGPT, and Vercel work on tasks in front of the whole team, with tabs for the plan, code diffs, and live previews.
High-stakes actions like pushing to production require a named human to approve inside the channel. Engineers review and approve; the agent executes. Every session archives itself, leaving a searchable record.

Bottom Line: Agent work is moving from individual terminals into shared, logged, team-visible channels, making the session itself the auditable artifact. Engineers should think now about what approval gates they want to own before defaults are set for them.

🇮🇳  India

OpenAI models now run inside India on AWS

AWS has made GPT-5.6 Terra and Luna available on Amazon Bedrock with in-country inferencing, meaning requests stay within India's Mumbai and Hyderabad regions, satisfying data residency rules for regulated sectors.
Luna costs up to 80% less and Terra up to 20% less following OpenAI's recent price cuts. Prompts are not used to train models and are not shared with OpenAI, the detail regulated buyers in finance, healthcare, and public sector need most.

Bottom Line: Frontier model access is catching up to India's compliance requirements, not the other way around. If your regulated client cited inference location as the blocker, that objection is now closed for two GPT-5.6 tiers.

TCS, Wipro, Infosys now measure outcomes instead of billable hours

Around 80% of TCS's business services contracts are now outcome-based, roughly double since late 2023. Clients are demanding 25-30% cost cuts. A HCLTech deal with E.ON pays nothing in year one, with payments tied to efficiency gains from year two.
The Nifty IT index is down a fifth this year, shedding $73 billion in value. Persistent and Coforge grew over 16% and 30% respectively; TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and HCLTech grew just 1-3%. TCS cut over 12,000 roles last year.

Bottom Line: The billable-hour model that built India's IT industry is structurally unwinding, not cyclically dipping. Mid-tier firms like Persistent, growing 16%, never relied on headcount pyramids, which is exactly why they are pulling ahead now.

An Indian city where AI is creating jobs for humans

Objectways Technologies in Karur employs 2,600 people reviewing video frame by frame to evaluate AI model performance, paying master's graduates $210-260 a month. 200 staff process roughly 70 hours of video daily against 1,000 hours arriving from clients.
About 2 million Indians turn 18 every month, and a 2025 government report estimates up to 1.5 million IT services jobs could vanish to AI. Annotation could contribute $10 billion to India's economy by 2030, but the throughput gap is already structural.

Bottom Line: Data annotation is the unglamorous foundation of physical AI, and India is already the primary source of that labour. The $10 billion annotation opportunity is real but marginal against a $315 billion IT industry being reshaped above it.

⚡  Mailr Signal

The Slack Code launch is the clearest sign yet that the unit of engineering work is shifting from the commit to the session. Once every agent action is logged and approval-gated in a shared channel, organisations will start measuring engineer productivity by the quality of their reviews, not their code output.
